I Want to Believe
When I took the Knitting hat class there were amigurumi kits on the shelf. Since I crochet, my friend asked me about them. She said they are all the rage. I gave the kits the side eye.
“If I’m going to make a toy, I’m going to SEW it!”, I proclaimed.
I figured sewing would be much faster. Crochet will be reserved for hats and scarves. I really have no need for toys, sewn or crocheted. I have Pia and Brian plus all the Barbies I collected last Summer.
Well, I ate my proclamation and declaration.
When I went to Michaels for felt for my tape project, I spotted the book “A Crochet World of Creepy Creatures and Cryptids” by Rikki Gustafson. Now I’ve seen amigurumi books before, but most of them have cutesy plants and animals. Very kawaii. This book is different. It has scary characters. The alien drew me in! It was a total impulse buy/ impulse project. I was giddy just thinking about making that Little Green Man.
First off, I was not expecting amigurumi to be simple. They look more complicated than they are. This alien pattern only used the single crochet stitch. Yes, the entire thing was just the single crochet! A beginner crocheter could make this.
This amigurumi stuff could get addicting. It’s a pretty quick project! The only part that can be challenging is creating the magic ring to start. But once you get over that hump it’s smooth sailing.
It was quite fun stuffing the alien head, lol. Once the body came together it was even more funny! What a pick-me-up! I couldn’t help but laugh while making him. I totally have no use for Alien and will probably just sit around like the rest of my dolls. But he makes me smile and who couldn’t use more smiles these days?
The eyes are just pieces of felt hot glued onto the head.
The squishiness, crochet texture and the small size is so satisfying to touch/hold. So tactile!
Alien is just so cute. I’m glad I ventured into amigurumi. Mulder and Scully might not be into Little Green Men, but I am.
